Sciencebod has a new theory. He actually calls it a theory giving license, I guess, to just about anyone to say of anything scientific, “it is only a theory.”
“This is intended as the briefest of summaries,” he writes in My new sandpit theory for how the Turin Shroud was produced – as a medieval hoax. I read it and prepared the following diagram to help you understand it.
Well, he can be given credit for (sort of) attempting to explain the 3D information in the image, which is at least an improvement over denying its existence. Other than that, it contradicts much of what is known about the Shroud (the extreme shallowness of the image, for instance, such that the cells of the linen fibers are essentially intact rather than scorched), and it’s bizarre and convoluted in a way that this picture captures nicely.
Am I missing something here? My understanding is that while the scorches on the Shroud from the various fire related events fluoresce, the image itself does not. See V.D.Miller and S.F.Pellicori, J.Biol.Photograph.Assoc., 49 (1981) 71. I’m assuming the Sciencebod “hot statue” images would fluoresce, and therefore cannot be the way the Shroud image was formed.
sciencebod only works with facts that suit him
Colin’s sandbag theory seems like “Belling of the Cat”.
Colin’s sandbag theory is now the only (scientific) game in town, apart from 21st century excimer uv lasers, but don’t tell anyone I told you so … ;-)
OK, so I couldn’t stay away, but even scientists are human, contrary to popular myth…
Tut, tut, Colin! You’re supposed to be “not responding” for a week! Back to the lab with you!
PS: Here’s an alternative take of my ‘Heath Robinson set-up’, one that sadly corresponds better with down-market reality.

Note the high-tech tray of sand and square of linen (cut from corner of decorator’s cloth). The cooker ring and pliars are out of picture. That was deliberate – to avoid introducing a surfeit of bewildering detail. One wouldn’t want to risk inducing sensory overload now, would one?
Like your animation. What did you use to make it with? How long did it take? Is it downloadable? If so then please send to patnclaire@yahoo.com
