From a teacher’s blog of a very busy, fast-paced seventh grade World History class at Manheim Central High School in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, we see Christianity being discussed as a philosophy that has shaped the world.
- February 14 begins with, “Today, we began our study of Christianity.”
- February 16 has this, “. . . we discussed five key questions about the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. Class concluded with an investigation of the Shroud of Turin.”
I’m glad all of this is being discussed. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall.
February 16
Today, we discussed the remainder of the Chapter 16 vocabulary words we completed for homework. Next, we worked together on a sheet called Correct the Statement where we had to identify false information in each statement and correct it with the facts. Next, we discussed five key questions about the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. Class concluded with an investigation of the Shroud of Turin.
Homework: We will take a quiz on Christianity next Tuesday. Students should study all tan Chapter 16 sheets. Additionally, history notebooks will be graded next Friday and extra credit packets are due on February 24 as well.
February 15
Today we reviewed the story of Jesus of Nazareth that we discussed yesterday. The rest of today focused on His arrest, trial and execution by the Roman government. We were careful, in telling this agonizing story to relate Rome’s perspective on the matter as they saw one emperor (king) as enough and would not tolerate another. Class concluded by watching and discussing carefully selected segments of a movie entitled, The Robe. The film is quite powerful in its portrayal of the crucifixion and how the teachings of Jesus impacted, and in some cases, transformed the lives of others.
Homework: No Homework.
February 14
Today, we began our study of Christianity, a philosophy that will change the Roman Empire and eventually, the culture of western Europe. We focused on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth to understand the basic concepts that make up Christian philosophy. We watched a video clip about the 12 Apostles, hand-picked by Jesus to carry His message throughout the Roman world after He was gone.
Homework: Have all 22 Chapter 16 vocabulary words defined in complete sentences for tomorrow.
