Dr. Kelly Kearse’s paper is as always worth reading nevertheless I don’t agree that in this kind of particular context it is not correct concluding that the Shroud of Turin and the Sudarium of Oviedo covered the same man on the basis of blood type.
Although from a scientific point of view this is essentially true based ONLY on AB blood type, we have to consider that there is a match between the shape of the bloodstains of the two relics namely in the occipital areas, and this did not happen by chance.
This finding is explained by the fact that the Sudarium covered the head and face of Jesus while he was hanging dead on the cross then ithis cloth was removed before Jesus body was wrapped in the Shroud in the tomb.
It is my opinion that as extraneous human DNA exists in both relics using molecular biology to relate blood samples from the two relics will not provide reliable data.
The fact that blood samples from both relics typed AB,, control areas did not type AB and there is a match between bloodstains, are enough data to permit a reasonable conclusion that both relics did indeed contact with the same Man (whose name was Jesus) even not considering the historical tradition linked to the relics.
This is not a question of faith it is rather a logical conclusion based on scientific studies.
